Utility Debt Relief Program
(3/17/2022) The American Rescue Plan Utility Debt Relief Program is being offered to help low-income households that have fallen behind on electric utility payments. View Electric Usage Online
South River Electric is proud to announce the enhancement of client services.
Residences and businesses are now able to view their electric usage online. Clients need only to log on to and request a username and password. Meter readings will be accessible through a secure internet connection. This service is provided free of charge. If you have any questions, please call our Utility Department at 732-257-1999, ext. 520.
Utility Connections
To have utilities connected and activate your account, you must go to the Borough of South River's Utility Office at the Municipal Building, 48 Washington Street, South River.
Please bring the following completed forms with you:
- Smoke Detector & CO Alarm Affidavit (PDF)
- A copy of your lease
The charge for establishing a utility account is as follows:

Deposit is applied to your open balance when the account is closed. When your account is closed, your deposit, if greater than the utilities due, will then be refunded. Payment is accepted by cash, check, or money order.
Non-Payment
If your electric or water utilities are shut off for non-payment, the following applies:
- All open balances on electric and/or water accounts are due and payable at this time.
- There is a reconnection fee of $50 for electric. There is a reconnection fee of $50 before 2 pm and $125 after 2 pm for water.
- Only cash, money order, credit card (online only), or certified funds will be accepted. No personal checks.
- During normal business hours, 8:30 am to 4:15 pm, payment is accepted only at the Municipal Building, 48 Washington Street.
- After normal business hours, 4:15 pm, payment (cash only) is accepted at the Police Station, 61 Main Street. Police Dispatchers will collect the money in full, and the Police will call the Utility Department to turn on the utilities. Any questions you have can only be answered by the Utility Office during normal business hours.
- Important: If your electricity is turned off for any reason, the Electric Department will not turn on your electric until your main circuit breaker is turned off. This is done for safety reasons, both yours and ours.
